The DoE Process

Five stages — from idea to optimal solution

Every DoE project follows a systematic progression. This course takes you through all five stages — giving you the tools to run a complete designed experiment from start to finish.

1
Planning
Define objectives, select factors and responses, choose levels, determine sample size, and plan randomisation.
Factors · Levels · Treatments
2
Screening
Use Plackett-Burman or fractional factorial designs to identify the vital few factors from a long initial list with fewer runs.
Plackett-Burman · Fractional Factorial
3
Modelling
Run full or fractional factorial designs on the significant factors. Build regression models and examine interactions in depth.
Full Factorial · Split Plot · ANOVA
4
Optimising
Apply Central Composite Design (CCD) to fit a quadratic surface and find the factor settings that achieve the target response.
CCD · Response Surface · Optimizer
5
Verification
Confirm the predicted optimum with confirmatory runs. Validate the model's predictions hold under real-world conditions.
Confirmation Runs · Model Validation
Design types covered

Every major DoE design — in one course

Full Factorial
All factor combinations
Study all main effects and every interaction — the gold standard when run count allows.
Fractional Factorial
Fewer runs, key insights
Sacrifice higher-order interactions to study more factors with significantly fewer experimental runs.
Plackett-Burman
Screening design
Screen up to N−1 factors in N runs. Identify the vital few before committing to a full design.
Split Plot
Hard-to-change factors
Handle factors that cannot be randomised between runs — such as oven temperature or machine setup.
CCD / RSM
Response surface optimisation
Fit a quadratic model using Central Composite Design to find the true optimum, not just the best tested point.
What you'll learn

From first principles to response surface optimisation

Master the fundamentals of DoE — factors, levels, treatments, responses — using hands-on coffee tasting and catapult examples that build intuition before the maths
Design and analyse 2-factor and 3-factor full factorial experiments — manually and in Minitab — and build regression equations that predict the response
Handle noise factors using blocking, analysis of covariance, and replication — and understand confounding and design resolutions in fractional factorial designs
Perform screening using Plackett-Burman design — reduce from many factors to the significant few with a fraction of the experimental runs
Interpret ANOVA p-values, main effects plots, interaction plots, Pareto charts of effects, and residual plots — the complete DoE output toolkit
Run split-plot designs for hard-to-change factors — set up, analyse, and use the response optimizer in Minitab to find the best settings
Apply Central Composite Design to fit a full quadratic model — understand circumscribed, face-centered, and inscribed CCD variants and choose the right one
Use model selection methods (forward, backward, stepwise) and compare models using R², adjusted R², predicted R², and VIF to build the best-fit parsimonious model

Who it's for

Built for engineers and quality professionals who want to experiment smarter

Quality engineers and Six Sigma practitioners

DoE is a core tool in the Analyse and Improve phases of DMAIC. This course gives you a practical command of designed experiments that goes well beyond what most CSSBB prep courses cover.

R&D, process, and manufacturing engineers

If you're responsible for product development, process optimisation, or root cause investigation, DoE gives you a systematic, statistically sound way to find the optimal factor settings — not just trial and error.

Performance improvement professionals

You work in continuous improvement and want a rigorous method for understanding how multiple factors interact to affect process output — screening out noise and modelling what really matters.

Anyone new to DoE with a basic statistics background

The course assumes familiarity with basic statistical ideas (means, variation, p-values) but no prior DoE knowledge. ANOVA and regression are reviewed inside the course so you can follow the analysis from day one.

Sandeep is an engineer and quality management expert with over four decades of experience in process improvement and experimental design. His approach throughout this course is consistent: start with a simple, memorable example — then build the rigour. The coffee-tasting and catapult experiments are not gimmicks; they are carefully chosen to make factor interactions and regression equations tangible before applying the same logic to complex industrial processes.

The result is a course that engineers describe as the clearest DoE course available — making Minitab, fractional factorial designs, and Central Composite Design accessible to working professionals across every industry.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a statistics background to take this course?
A basic understanding of statistics — means, variation, and p-values — is helpful. The course reviews ANOVA and regression in Section 2, so you can follow the analysis even if your statistics knowledge is rusty. No prior DoE experience is required. The course is specifically designed to build DoE intuition through simple, memorable examples before introducing the mathematics.
Do I need Minitab to follow the course?
Minitab is used throughout the demonstration lectures, but you do not need an active Minitab licence to follow the course and understand the concepts. The demonstrations show exactly what to enter and how to interpret the output. If you have access to Minitab (a free 30-day trial is available from Minitab's website), you can follow along directly — but the course is fully understandable without it.
Is this course relevant for the ASQ CSSBB exam?
Yes. Design of Experiments is a major component of the ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) Body of Knowledge, covering full and fractional factorial designs, response surface methodology, and the analysis and interpretation of DoE results. This course provides in-depth, practical coverage of all of these areas — going beyond what most CSSBB prep courses include on this topic.
How many PMI PDUs does this course provide?
This course provides 5.0 pre-approved PMI PDUs and 5.0 SHRM PDCs — double the credit offered by most Quality Gurus courses, reflecting the depth and length of the content. Quality Gurus Inc. is a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP #6034) and an official SHRM Recertification Partner. Instructions for claiming your PDUs are provided inside the course.
Is this course accredited?
Yes. The course is accredited by The CPD Group (UK) — Provider #784310, Accreditation #1016190 — and qualifies for 5.0 CPD hours. A Quality Gurus Inc. verified digital certificate is issued on completion of the course.
What is covered in the fractional factorial and design resolution section?
The course covers fractional factorial designs in depth — including how to set up half and quarter factorial designs, how confounding (aliasing) works, and how to read a design resolution (III, IV, V). You will understand which interactions are confounded with main effects at each resolution level, and how to use this to make informed choices about which design to run. Minitab demonstrations show the practical steps from design creation to output interpretation.
How long will it take to complete the course?
The course contains 5 hours and 8 minutes of video content across 48 lessons. Most students complete it over 3–5 focused study sessions. You have 365 days of full access, so you can work at your own pace and revisit the Minitab demonstration lectures as many times as you need.
