Two categories of MSA

One course covers both — continuous and discrete measurement systems

The right MSA study depends on your data type. This course teaches you both — so you can correctly assess any measurement system, whether your data is numeric or attribute-based.

Continuous Data
Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility (GRR)
For measurements that produce numeric values — dimensions, weight, temperature, pressure. Assesses how much of the observed variation is measurement error versus real part-to-part variation.
  • Type 1 Gage Study — single part, single operator, bias and Cg/Cgk
  • Run Chart — visual check of measurement system behaviour
  • Linearity & Bias Study — bias across the full operating range
  • GRR Crossed — multiple operators & parts, Range / X̄-R / ANOVA methods
  • GRR Nested — for destructive testing where parts cannot be re-measured
  • NDC — Number of Distinct Categories discriminatory power
Discrete / Attribute Data
Attribute Agreement Analysis (AAA)
For measurements that produce categorical results — pass/fail, good/bad, ratings on a scale. Assesses how consistently appraisers agree with themselves, with each other, and with the known standard.
  • Agreement within appraisers — consistency over repeated assessments
  • Agreement with the standard — correctness of each appraiser's decisions
  • Agreement between appraisers — inter-rater consistency
  • Kappa Value — measuring agreement beyond chance for nominal data
  • Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance — agreement for ordinal (ranked) data
  • Fleiss' Kappa — agreement across more than two appraisers
MSA study types

Every study type — explained and demonstrated in Minitab

Continuous · Accuracy
Type 1 Gage Study
Assess a single gage using one operator and one reference part. Calculate Cg, Cgk, bias, and precision to tolerance ratio (PTR). The starting point for any gage qualification.
Cg · Cgk · PTR · Bias
Continuous · Visualisation
Run Chart
Create a gage run chart to visually display measurement variation within and between operators across multiple parts — the fastest way to spot systematic operator differences.
Within-operator · Between-operator
Continuous · Accuracy
Linearity & Bias Study
Assess whether bias is constant across the gage's full operating range — or whether it changes (true linearity error). Requires five reference parts spanning the measurement range.
Slope · Regression · P-value
Continuous · Precision
Gage R&R — Crossed
The most common GRR study. Multiple operators each measure the same set of parts multiple times. Separates repeatability, reproducibility, and part-to-part variation using Range, X̄-R, or ANOVA.
%GRR · NDC · ANOVA · Range method
Continuous · Destructive Testing
Gage R&R — Nested
Used when parts are destroyed in measurement and cannot be re-measured by another operator. Each part is unique to one operator — a different design and a different ANOVA structure.
Destructive tests · Nested ANOVA
Discrete / Attribute Data
Attribute Agreement Analysis
Evaluate inspectors who make pass/fail or ordinal rating decisions. Measure consistency with themselves, agreement with each other, and correctness against the known standard.
Kappa · Kendall · Fleiss
What you'll learn

From measurement basics to expert-level GRR interpretation

Understand accuracy vs. precision — and the three measures of each: bias, linearity, stability (accuracy) and repeatability, reproducibility, resolution (precision)
Conduct and interpret a Type 1 Gage Study — calculate Cg, Cgk, and PTR, test whether observed bias is statistically significant using a t-test, and use Minitab output
Perform a Linearity and Bias Study — set up the study in Minitab, interpret the regression line and p-values, and identify significant bias or linearity errors across the operating range
Run a Crossed Gage R&R study using all three methods — Range method (quick estimate), Average & Range method (X̄-R), and ANOVA — and understand when each is appropriate
Interpret every number and chart in the Crossed GRR output — %GRR, %repeatability, %reproducibility, %part-to-part variation, NDC, variance components, X̄ chart, and R chart
Set up and analyse a Nested GRR for destructive testing — understand why a crossed design is impossible, how the nested ANOVA structure differs, and how reproducibility is interpreted
Perform Attribute Agreement Analysis for nominal and ordinal data — assess appraiser consistency, correctness against the standard, and agreement between appraisers using Minitab
Calculate and interpret the Kappa Value and Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance — understand observed vs. chance agreement, cross-tabulation, and how to act on the results

Who it's for

Built for everyone involved in measurement and quality decisions

Quality engineers and Six Sigma practitioners

MSA is a core tool in the Measure phase of DMAIC. This course gives you the depth to conduct, analyse, and act on every major MSA study type — going well beyond what most CSSBB prep courses cover on this topic.

Quality managers in IATF 16949 environments

IATF 16949 requires documented measurement system analysis. This course equips you to lead MSA activities across your organisation — selecting the right study type, setting up studies correctly, and interpreting the results with confidence.

Production managers and process engineers

If your process relies on measurements to make accept/reject or in-process decisions, understanding your measurement system is essential. A bad gauge or inconsistent inspector can produce perfectly good products that are rejected — or failed products that ship.

Anyone new to MSA — no prior knowledge required

The course starts from scratch. Basic statistical concepts — normal distribution, hypothesis testing, process capability — are introduced inside the course as they become relevant, so no prior statistics background is assumed.

Sandeep has taught Measurement System Analysis to quality professionals across manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, and service industries for over four decades. His core teaching principle here is the same as throughout his courses: explain the concept clearly first, then show it in Minitab. Every study type in this course is introduced conceptually before being demonstrated step by step in the software.

Students consistently describe this as the course that finally made GRR interpretation clear — and the one that gave them the confidence to run MSA studies independently and present the results to management.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need prior knowledge of statistics or MSA?
No prior MSA knowledge is expected. The course starts from the very basics — defining what measurement system variation is and why it matters. Statistical concepts such as hypothesis testing, process capability (Cp and Cpk), and ANOVA are introduced inside the course as they become relevant, so you can follow along without a statistics background.
Is this course relevant for IATF 16949?
Yes. IATF 16949 (the automotive quality management standard) requires MSA studies as part of the measurement system requirements under the AIAG MSA manual. This course covers the key study types required in IATF 16949 environments — Type 1 Gage Study, Crossed GRR, and Attribute Agreement Analysis — with interpretation guidelines aligned to AIAG standards.
Do I need Minitab to follow this course?
Minitab is used throughout the demonstration lectures. You do not need an active Minitab licence to understand the concepts and interpret the outputs — all demonstrations are shown step by step. If you have access to Minitab (a 30-day free trial is available from Minitab's website), you can follow along directly.
What is the difference between Crossed GRR and Nested GRR?
In a Crossed GRR study, every operator measures every part — making it possible to separate operator variation from part variation and detect operator×part interactions. In a Nested GRR, each part is only measured by one operator — required when testing is destructive and parts cannot be remeasured. The Nested design has a different ANOVA structure, and reproducibility in a nested study is zero by design. Both are covered in depth in this course.
How many PMI PDUs does this course provide?
This course provides 6.0 pre-approved PMI PDUs and 6.0 SHRM PDCs — the highest PDU credit in this course series, reflecting the depth and duration of the content (74 lessons, 6h 25m). Quality Gurus Inc. is a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP #6034) and an official SHRM Recertification Partner. Instructions for claiming your PDUs are provided inside the course.
Is this course accredited?
Yes. The course is accredited by The CPD Group (UK) — Provider #784310, Accreditation #1016217 — qualifying for 6.0 CPD hours. A Quality Gurus Inc. verified digital certificate is issued on completion.
How long will it take to complete the course?
The course contains 6 hours and 25 minutes of video content across 74 lessons. Most students complete it over 4–6 focused study sessions. You have 365 days of full access, so you can work through it at your own pace and revisit the Minitab demonstration lectures as often as needed.
