4-in-1 course structure

Four complete courses in one — from statistics basics to advanced SPC

Most SPC courses assume statistical knowledge you don't yet have, or use Minitab exclusively. This course builds everything from scratch and demonstrates every technique in both Minitab and Excel — so you truly understand what the software is doing.

Course 1
Statistics Foundation
Normal, Binomial, and Poisson distributions; Central Limit Theorem; hypothesis testing concepts; type I and type II errors; subgroup size. Everything you need to understand SPC without a prior statistics background.
18 lessons · 2h 3m
Course 2
Control Charts in Minitab
Build and interpret every major control chart — np, p, c, u, X̄-R, X̄-S, I-MR — plus advanced charts (EWMA, CUSUM, Short Run, Pre-Control) using Minitab. Includes all 8 Nelson Rules for pattern detection.
28 lessons · 3h 1m
Course 3
Control Charts in Excel
Re-create the same control charts in Microsoft Excel — formula-by-formula. Excel builds deep intuition about control limits, R-bar/D2 estimates, and p-bar calculations. No Minitab licence needed to follow along.
Integrated with Course 2
Course 4
Process Capability Analysis
Calculate Cp, Cpk, Pp, and Ppk in both Excel and Minitab. Distinguish sigma-within from sigma-overall. Handle non-normal distributions — normality testing with Anderson-Darling, Weibull fitting, non-normal capability indices.
14 lessons · 1h 26m
Control chart coverage

Every chart type — standard and advanced — in one course

Attribute Data (Discrete)
When your output is pass/fail or a count of defects
Choose the right chart based on whether you're measuring defective items or individual defects, and whether your subgroup size is fixed or variable.
np Chart
Number defective — constant subgroup size
p Chart
Proportion defective — variable subgroup size
c Chart
Count of defects — constant subgroup size
u Chart
Defects per unit — variable subgroup size
Variable Data (Continuous)
When your output is a measurement — length, weight, temperature
Select based on subgroup size: I-MR for individual readings, X̄-R for subgroups of 2–8, and X̄-S for subgroups of 9 or more.
I-MR Chart
Individual values — one reading per subgroup
X̄-R Chart
Subgroup mean and range — n = 2 to 8
X̄-S Chart
Subgroup mean and std deviation — n ≥ 9
All 8 Nelson Rules
Pattern detection beyond out-of-control points

Advanced charts — also covered in full

EWMA
Exponentially Weighted Moving Average — detects small process mean shifts
CUSUM
Cumulative Sum — tabular approach with k and h values for trend detection
Pre-Control
Specification-limit-based zones — quick startup and restart decisions
Short Run
Difference and Z-charts for short production runs with mixed part numbers
What you'll learn

From variation basics to expert-level control chart interpretation

Distinguish common cause from special cause variation — and understand why treating common causes as special causes makes processes worse, not better
Select the right control chart for your data type — attribute or variable, fixed or variable subgroup size, individual readings or rational subgroups
Build all four attribute charts (np, p, c, u) in both Excel and Minitab — including manual control limit calculations using P-bar, C-bar, and Poisson-based formulas
Build X̄-R, X̄-S, and I-MR charts — calculating X̄-bar, R-bar, and control limits from the D3, D4, A2, A3, B3, B4 constants with full worked examples
Apply all 8 Nelson Rules for control chart interpretation — go well beyond "single point outside the limits" to detect trends, cycles, hugging, and systematic patterns
Use EWMA and CUSUM charts to detect very small process mean shifts that standard Shewhart charts miss — particularly useful for critical-to-quality characteristics
Calculate Cp, Cpk, Pp, and Ppk — understand the difference between sigma-within and sigma-overall, and why Pp and Ppk tell suppliers' customers more than Cp alone
Handle non-normal data in process capability — run Anderson-Darling normality tests, fit a Weibull or other distribution, and generate valid non-normal capability indices in Minitab
Course curriculum

4 teaching sections · 69 lessons · 7h 2m

A

Basics of SPC

8 lessons · 32 min
  • What is quality — ISO 9000:2015 definition, conformance to requirements, consistency of performance
  • Understanding a process — inputs, outputs, feedback loops, and the connection to control charts
  • Variation Part 1 — the 5M+E sources: people, machines, materials, methods, measurement, environment
  • Variation Part 2 — common cause vs. special cause; when to act and when to leave the process alone
  • Process control vs. process capability — two separate questions; both required to run an IATF 16949 process correctly
B

Basics of Statistics

18 lessons · 2h 3m
  • Data types — discrete vs. continuous; nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio scales
  • Central tendency and dispersion — mean, median, mode; range, standard deviation, variance
  • Computing descriptive statistics in Excel — Analysis ToolPak, STDEV.S vs. STDEV.P
  • Standard deviation estimation methods — R-bar/D2 approach for control chart calculations
  • Binomial and Poisson distributions — theory and Excel calculations for attribute chart control limits
  • Normal distribution — z-scores, normal tables, Excel functions, area under the curve
  • Central Limit Theorem — why sample means form a normal distribution even for non-normal data
  • Subgroup size considerations — within-subgroup vs. between-subgroup variation
  • Type I and Type II errors — false alarms vs. missed signals; how subgroup size affects both
C

Control Charts

28 lessons · 3h 1m
  • Control limits vs. specification limits — fundamentally different purposes, often confused
  • Two phases of control charts — Phase 1 (trial limits) and Phase 2 (ongoing monitoring)
  • All four attribute charts — np, p, c, u — theory and Minitab/Excel demonstrations for each
  • All three variable charts — X̄-R, X̄-S, I-MR — with full constant-table calculations
  • All 8 Nelson Rules — three-part series covering every pattern detection criterion
  • Advanced charts — Pre-Control, Short Run (Difference and ZMR), EWMA, CUSUM — theory and Minitab/Excel
D

Process Capability Analysis

14 lessons · 1h 26m
  • Process control vs. process capability — an in-control process can still be incapable
  • Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk — all four indices; when to use each and what each reveals about your process
  • Sigma-within vs. sigma-overall — R-bar/D2 approach vs. overall standard deviation; short-term vs. long-term variation
  • Why Cp alone is insufficient — centering matters; Cpk adjusts for the process mean offset
  • Normality testing — histograms, probability plots, Anderson-Darling test, p-value interpretation
  • Non-normal capability — fitting a Weibull distribution in Minitab, non-normal Pp and Ppk

Who it's for

Built for quality and manufacturing professionals at every level

Six Sigma Green and Black Belts

SPC is central to the Control phase of DMAIC. This course takes you beyond DMAIC prep to real-world implementation depth — EWMA and CUSUM for small shifts, non-normal capability analysis, and advanced pattern detection using all 8 Nelson Rules.

Quality engineers in IATF 16949 environments

IATF 16949 mandates SPC as one of its five core tools. This course covers the standard directly — control chart selection, two-phase implementation, and process capability reporting — giving you everything you need to set up and defend your control plan.

Quality managers and quality technicians

Whether you're selecting charts for operators to maintain on the shop floor or reviewing capability data from suppliers, this course gives you the depth to make the right decisions — and to explain them clearly to the people around you.

Anyone who needs SPC but doesn't have Minitab

Every technique in this course is demonstrated in Excel as well as Minitab. Building a control chart by hand in Excel builds real understanding of what the software computes — and means you can use SPC immediately, regardless of tool access.

Sandeep has taught Statistical Process Control to quality professionals in manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, and service industries for over four decades. His approach to SPC is built on a conviction that has shaped every lecture in this course: if you understand why control limits are calculated the way they are, you will never misuse a control chart.

That is why he teaches the statistics foundation first, shows every calculation in Excel before Minitab, and dedicates an entire section to distinguishing process control from process capability — two questions that far too many practitioners conflate. Students consistently describe this as the course that finally made SPC intuitive, not just mechanical.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need prior statistics knowledge to take this course?
No. Section B of the course — 18 lessons on statistics basics — covers everything you need before the control chart and process capability sections. Normal, Binomial, and Poisson distributions; Central Limit Theorem; standard deviation estimation; subgroup concepts and Type I/Type II errors are all introduced from scratch.
Do I need Minitab to follow along?
No. Every technique in this course is demonstrated in both Minitab and Microsoft Excel. Excel is available to virtually everyone and actually builds deeper understanding — when you calculate a control limit by formula in Excel, you see exactly what Minitab is doing. A 30-day free trial is available from Minitab's website if you wish to follow the Minitab demonstrations directly.
What does "4-in-1 course" mean?
The course combines four things into a single, coherent programme: (1) a statistics foundation covering the distributions and concepts that underpin SPC, (2) control chart creation and interpretation in Minitab, (3) the same charts built from scratch in Excel so you understand the underlying calculations, and (4) a complete process capability analysis module covering Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk, normality testing, and non-normal capability analysis.
Is this course relevant for IATF 16949?
Yes. SPC is one of the five IATF 16949 core tools. This course covers the standard's SPC requirements in depth — correct chart selection, Phase 1 and Phase 2 chart development, capability studies, and the interpretation skills needed to respond to out-of-control signals. It is directly applicable to automotive quality roles.
What are Nelson Rules, and are all 8 covered?
Nelson Rules (also known as Western Electric Rules in AIAG-aligned versions) are pattern-detection criteria for control charts. Rule 1 (a point beyond 3σ) is the most familiar, but the other 7 rules detect trends, shifts, cycles, hugging, and systematic alternation — patterns that indicate process change even when no point is out of control. All 8 rules are covered across a three-part lecture series in Section C.
What is the difference between Cp/Cpk and Pp/Ppk?
Cp and Cpk use sigma-within — estimated from the within-subgroup variation (R-bar/D2) — and reflect short-term process performance. Pp and Ppk use sigma-overall — the total standard deviation including all variation in the data set — and reflect long-term performance. Both sets of indices are covered in detail, with Excel and Minitab demonstrations. The course also explains why IATF 16949 customers typically request Ppk from suppliers rather than Cpk.
How many PMI PDUs does this course provide?
7.0 pre-approved PMI PDUs and 7.0 SHRM PDCs — the highest PDU count in this course series. Quality Gurus Inc. is a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP #6034). The course is also accredited by The CPD Group (UK), Accreditation #1016216, for 7.0 CPD hours.
