What experience do I need to sit the CQE exam?
ASQ requires 8 years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the CQE Body of Knowledge, with a minimum of 3 years in a decision-making (professional-level) position. A degree substitution applies: a bachelor's degree reduces the experience requirement by 2 years (to 6 years), and a master's or higher reduces it by 4 years (to 4 years). Is the CQE exam open book?
Yes — the CQE is an open-book exam. You may bring printed reference materials into the test centre. However, the exam is time-pressured (160 questions in 5 hours 18 minutes), so candidates who rely heavily on their references frequently run out of time. The downloadable slides in this course are specifically structured for fast look-up under exam conditions.
How many questions are on the exam, and how long is it?
The CBT (computer-based test) version has 175 multiple-choice questions: 160 scored and 15 unscored pretest questions. Total appointment time is 5.5 hours; actual exam time is 5 hours 18 minutes. The paper-and-pencil version (offered at select locations) has 160 questions and a 5-hour time limit. This course prepares you for both formats.
Which BoK version does this course cover?
This course covers the 2022 CQE Body of Knowledge, which has been in effect since October 2022. Key changes from the 2015 BoK include an expanded Risk Management section (from 15 to 21 questions), new topics such as dFMEA/pFMEA, RACI matrix, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and removal of some older topics such as PERT/CPM. If you studied from older materials, this course will fill those gaps.
The Quantitative Methods section looks intimidating. How does the course handle it?
Section VI (Quantitative Methods & Tools) is the largest and most mathematically demanding section, with 34 questions. The course works through it topic by topic — data types and descriptive statistics, probability distributions, hypothesis testing, ANOVA, regression, SPC (with process capability), and DOE. Each concept is explained clearly with worked examples, and the practice questions in Section VI are among the most exam-realistic in the course.
What practice questions are included?
The course includes 300+ practice questions distributed across all 7 BoK sections. Questions are written at the same cognitive levels as the ASQ CQE exam — including Apply, Analyze, and Evaluate level questions that require you to work through scenarios, not just recall definitions.
